About two years ago I set a challenge to the manufacturers of AC power sockets to officially develop universal power sockets in order that we don't have to lug around adaptors or call for them from housekeeping.

Although none have reacted to this (however, you can get them off the shelf in China), I see a lot more hotels with adaptors either in situ by the desk, or in the mini bar – for in-stay use, or purchase.

Now it's time for my next crusade – USB power sockets.

Over the last couple of years with the proliferation of such devices as iPod's, cell phones, Black Berry's etc etc, people are looking to USB chargers versus schlepping around a bunch of power bars/adaptors. The major downside of this is that you require a PC with a USB port to plug into.

My idea and challenge is that we invite power socket manufacturers, to create a USB wall socket that you can plug into – much like a regular power socket, but without the requisite PC to do this.

The potential market is huge – maybe every hotel room – so when these guys look at the R&D cost for development, they can measure what sort of RoI there can be.

Anyone listening?
