Surprises In The Senate When this year began, I did not think this was possible, but it has been an unbelievably exciting month to watch the United States Senate. The Senate, normally the paradigm of stability, is surprising a lot of Washington veterans like me with its turbulence. Tuesday, 26 January 2010

Healthcare, Las Vegasâand Santa  Last week, I had the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the International Society of Hotel Association Executivesâ (ISHAE) winter conference. ISHAEâs membership consists of the chief staff executives and their staff members who run the many state and local lodging associations found in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.Wednesday, 16 December 2009

Thanksgiving Travels  Last Monday, I had the pleasure of traveling to the Colorado Hotel & Lodging Association and addressing their annual conference at the Broadmoor. President Christine OâDonnell and her staff did an outstanding job putting together an action packed agenda and Cindy Johnson of the Broadmoor was on hand to be sure everything went smoothly at the hotel. Tuesday, 24 November 2009

Some blog readers have wondered what my weeks are like when Congress is in session, so here is what I faced last week:

Taking A Break, On and Off The Hill  The Senate adjourned last Friday, leaving its work on their version of the massive healthcare bill unfinished. I was happy with that outcome because it leaves open the chance for our members to talk to their lawmakers while they are back in their states about the bill and what changes need to be made to it to make the legislation palatable to a hotel business.Thursday, 13 August 2009

A Double-Serving of Healthcare and Blacklisting It seems all of Washington is focused like a laser on healthcare over the past two weeks. However, the focus on health care seems to be slowing down significantly, leaving room for other issues. I knew that a July 31 deadline by the House to pass a bill was going to be very difficult to meet because of the complexity of the healthcare legislation, and it would be unreachable because over the ...Tuesday, 4 August 2009
