Visitors from around the world meet this week in Bangkok for a more than the usual hospitality, this time to witness Thailand's moving phenomenon in fashion. Bangkok Fashion Week 2006 begins this week with no less than Thai Royalty as its premiere offering.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Narirantana of Thailand unveiled her Autumn/Winter 2006 designs as the opening show of Bangkok Fashion Week 2006. Held at the chic Fashion Dome by the lake in the Queen Sirikit Center and attended by no less than His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maja Vajiralongkorn of Thailand and family.

Dubbed as "Fly to Noveau," the concept was inspired by the personal surroundings of the Princess blending clothing with art. The designs brought back images and touches of the 1920's to 1930's integrating Thai designs, textile and raw materials. Another prominent reflection in the men's collection is the "Aviator" concept which was inspired by her father, the Crown Prince who shared with her memories about vintage planes during their flying moments.

All of Thai's prominent fashion and lifestyle personalities are present in an evening of more than fashion statements but also endearing royalty mark. Buyers from the international marlet, foreign fashion critics and lifestyle fashionistas also came to witness the event. The collections are of very earthly colors that combines chic and comfort using Thai designs. Although it has the ability to go up as a couture creation, the Princess vision was to create an appeling ready to wear clothing infused with sexy twist to encourage Thai teenagers to wear Thai fabrics.

But the world was in awe during the fashion show with international media converging to exclusively cover and photograph the collections. The main piece is now on exhibit at the Queen Sirikit Center for the International Trade Fair happening simultaneously in the Fashion event.

The first event last year opened a wider world for Thai designers. To date many local brands such as Senada Theory, Tube Gallery, Sretsis, Fly Now, Grey by Greyhound and Head Quarters have been recognised by international fashion communities.

This year’s event is designed to be a fashion festival able to captivate the audience. We want to attract both local and international members of the fashion community, as well as buyers and media.

The five day event comprises of six main activities:

The Catwalk Shows, run daily from March 14-19, and include over 40 Thai designers.

There are two Catwalk Show locations. The Catwalk Shows at the Fashion Dome, a majestic air dome constructed over the middle of the lake at Benjakitti Park, next to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). The other is ‘Super’ Catwalk, a special catwalk constructed in the QSNCC Plenary Hall displaying the collections of prominent Thai designers.

The Trade Fair will include industry professionals from the textile and garment, jewellery and accessory, and leather and footwear sectors.

The Designer Showcase aims to highlight Thai creative talents among the trade industries.

Graduate Fashion Week will feature over 80 works from design students representing 30 local universities and institutes. The week will conclude with an award ceremony on March 19.

Fashion Talk will offer an opportunity for the fashion community to meet local and international fashion professionals. Topics include merchandising management, product development, and trend analysis.

Labyrinth of Diva will showcase gems and jewellery.

Graduate Fashion Week Award winning Ceremony will be held on March 19 to announce best young designers who have outstanding design works displayed at the Graduate Fashion Week and celebrate their talents as well.

Thailand’s textile and garment exports rose to 5.5 billion baht over the first ten months of 2005, reporting an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2004. The leather industry also reported an 8% increase in exports compared to the same period in 2004, totaling 1.4 billion baht. Compared to the previous year, total exports of the gems and jewellery in 2005 rose 21% to 2.9 billion baht. ( Source from Thailand Department of Export Promotion)
