Climate Change and Tourism | Green Hotelier

Few now argue against the consensus that climate change is happening and that we all have to do something about it; locally, nationally and globally. The latest edition of greenhotelier focuses on ‘Climate Change and Tourism’, providing a summary of the background to the issues and how the travel and tourism industry is reacting to the challenges. Included in the feature is a comment piece from Professor Geoffrey Lipman, Assistant Secretary General, United Nations World Tourism Organisation, who says, “from now on it’s a quadruple bottom line – environmental, social, economic and climate”.

Among the feature’s examples of best practice highlighted are:

  • Marriott Hotels International, whose energy management programmes have set an industry standard and help the company make huge savings both in its environmental impact and costs.
  • Doubletree Hotel, Portland, Oregon, USA, which is working towards LEED-EB certification.
  • Q&A with Jan Peter Bergkvist, Vice President of Scandic’s Sustainable Business department, which has recently announced a commitment to phasing out its use of fossil fuel by 2025.
  • Eurostar, the high-speed rail operator, which has launched a ‘Tread Lightly’ initiative that aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25 per cent per traveller journey by 2012.

Included in this issue of greenhotelier is a viewpoint on ‘Architecture, Design and Climate Change’, by Jeremy Blake, Purcell Miller Tritton Architects, who says that a groundswell of new initiatives and design solutions are making significant headway not only in addressing a discerning market but also in delivering “huge commercial advantages to the industry”.
