Destination Stewardship | greenhotelier

The latest edition of greenhotelier focuses on ‘Destination Stewardship’ – a concept that has received growing attention in the hotel industry over recent years. The feature provides a summary of the background to the issues and includes a variety of best practice case studies from around the world. This issue’s comment piece is from Ed Fuller, President and Managing Director, International Lodging, Marriott International, who writes about the challenge for hotel companies to become better stewards of the environment. He says: “In addition to revenue, profit and growth, we are also focused on destination stewardship. We are not just selling hotels but the destination as well.”

Among the feature’s examples of best practice highlighted are:

  • Jetwing Hotels, Sri Lanka, which has shown an enduring commitment to social and environmental practices since the group founded in the 1970s.
  • National Geographic Traveler magazine’s ‘Index of Destination Stewardship’, which has over the last four years published a ‘Destination Scorecard’ for the following destinations: World Heritage Destinations (2006); North American National Parks (2005); Global Destinations (2004); and Island and Archipelagos (2007).
  • Fairmont Mayakoba, Mayan Riviera, Mexico, which has partnered with a local tour operator in support of economic growth for local communities in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
  • New Zealand Tourism, which has turned to the Maori principle of ‘Kaitiakitanga’ (guardianship) as part of its New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010.

Included in this issue of greenhotelier is a Know-How section on Furniture, Fixtures and Fittings – our guide to choosing sustainable items, including eco-labelling schemes and a checklist for comparing the impacts of different products.
