Cornell Hospitality Quarterly Observes 50th Anniversary
Its continuing mission: Share research-based information with the hospitality industry The Cornell Hospitality Quarterly (CQ), the hospitality industry's first journal of applied research, observes 50 years of publication in 2010. The CQ's anniversary observance will continue throughout the year, featuring articles that both analyze industry trends and issues of the last decades and project future progress. The observance begins with the upcoming February 2010 issue, which will feature a discussion of recent mergers and acquisitions, how to structure an effective loyalty program, and industry analysis from STR and PKF Hospitality Research, as well as the current status of hotel management contracts, hotel branding strategy, and spa operation.
The CQ was launched in 1960 by H.B. Meek, founding dean of the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. Writing in Volume 1, Number 1, Meek explained that the CQ would fulfill a long-standing need for "a scholarly type of hotel and restaurant publication." Noting the strength of the existing trade press, Meek said the new journal's mission "would be to provide a forum for serious discussion by all interested and competent parties of the problems and progress of the hotel industry."
The CQ's content has evolved in parallel with the school's curriculum and with the industry's growing sophistication. Although early articles focused on operations-based research, such as carpet quality and produce purchasing, the CQ also had a management focus from the beginning. Over the years, the number of management-focused articles and those based on academic theory has grown, and operations-based articles have likewise focused on management issues, in keeping with the industry's needs.
"I view my role as editor and the role of the CQ as an opportunity to give appreciation to the hospitality industry, readers, authors, editorial board, previous editors, and to my colleagues by providing a mechanism in which interesting and relevant knowledge is shared," said editor Linda Canina, who is an associate professor at the School of Hotel Administration. "In keeping with the CQ's mission, my main focus has been to publish articles that add to managerial knowledge in the hospitality industry by developing strategies to focus the journal's position, such as special issues and providing feedback to authors that will improve their research."
The Cornell Hospitality Quarterly is managed by Sage Publishing, which offers individual CQ articles both by electronic downloads or pay-per-view, as well as conventional subscriptions at http://cqx.sagepub.com/. Selected featured articles are available at no charge from the Center for Hospitality Research
