STS Communications announced today that it has completed a successful trial of HotelNet Access, a service that allows hotel guests to connect their laptops quickly and easily to the Internet. STS, which conducted a successful 60 day trial in the 100 concierge level rooms at the Marriott, announced that it would be equipping all 613 rooms at the Denver Marriott City Center with HotelNet Access.
HotelNet Access allows guests to connect to a fast and reliable Internet connection directly from inside the hotel. Guests dial Extension 2000 for an immediate connection via their modem, at an unlimited daily rate. Guests receive dedicated access to a T1 line and have commented on improved speed and convenience since the Denver Marriott City Center began the program. No Ethernet card is required.
In addition, guests are seeing improved value with the Marriott's new program. Many guests accrue charges for Internet access through long distance, local and 800 numbers access for Internet. Therefore, HotelNet's flat pricing of $4.99 presents guests with a distinct cost and value advantage. In addition, Internet access from hotels can be painfully slow, but with HotelNet guests receive dedicated access via a T1, resulting in much faster access.
Making matters difficult for the hotel are the lengthy Internet connection times that swamp the hotel's telephone system adding cost and performance liabilities. HotelNet relieves this problem by connecting guest to a dedicated Internet data network.
The Marriott's move reflects a shift that is taking place in the hospitality industry. Business travelers, who comprise a substantial portion of the Marriott's clientele, require services that help them achieve greater productivity during their guest stays. The growing use of the Internet has caused the Marriott and other hotels to look at new guest amenities, such as STS's HotelNet offering. More and more, these amenities will be important factors for business travelers' deciding where to stay, making technology a key to a healthy bottom line, industry experts say.
