Sol Meliá and Telefonica DataCorp Create 'SolNet'
At an investment of 12 million euros, the system connects hotel offices throughout the world for sales & marketing activities

Singapore, 21st May 2001 - Sol Meliá announced a joint agreement with Telefonica DataCorp to create a "SolNet" system. Representing an investment of over 12 million euros, the system involves connecting the Group's properties and corporate offices throughout the world and a series of joint sales & marketing activities. This agreement is part of the Group's overall "e-transformation" programme which to date includes Sol Meliá's involvement as a founding member of such e-commerce ventures including Hotelnetb2b, a business-to-business e-commerce portal, AOL Spain, a business-to-consumer portal and the creation of an online travel agency, Meliaviajes.com. The Group is currently focusing on the fourth generation of its company website at solmelia.com portal, and its third generation Intranet.

  • Sol Meliá has opened its first hotel in Zamora: the Meliá Horus Zamora Boutique Hotel, an elegant 19th. Century Palace located in the heart of the city magnificently restored and refurbished to provide 45 luxurious rooms. The opening of the new hotel serves to further enhance Sol Meliá objective of territorial diversification throughout the whole of Spain through footholds in cities in which it has yet made its presence.
  • Sol Meliá has opened its first managed hotel in Segovia: the Tryp Comendador. The 150 rooms hotel is located in the "Los Angeles de San Rafael" residential area and is 40 minutes drive from Madrid.
  • Sol Meliá's seventh ski resort property, the 100 rooms Sol Vielha hotel located in the Valle de Aran in the heart of Catalan Pyrenees in Spain will be incorporated under a renting agreement in October 2002 and will be opened on December 2002.
  • A management agreement has been signed by Sol Meliá to manage the 206 rooms Meliá Olbia located in Cerdeña, Italy. To be opened on 3rd March 2003, the hotel is owned by Geocenter Spa.
  • The 496 rooms Paradisus Maya located in Riviera Maya, Mexico will be incorporated in November 2001 under a management agreement with its owner Promociones Playa Blanca S.A.de C.V.
  • The 72 rooms Melia Las Claras Boutique Hotel located in Salamanca (Spain) will be incorporated under a management agreement with its owner Las Claras 2000 SL in March 2002.
  • The Meliá Playa Conchal Beach & Golf Resort has won Costa Rica's most coveted environment award, The Ecological Blue Flag for the fourth consecutive year. The Ecological Blue Flag award programme was established in 1996 to encourage coastal communities throughout the country to take an active interest in the protection of their local environment.
