GrandHotelSalone, the event dedicated to the hotel and hospitality industry, took place in Milan 10-15 April 2002, concomitantly with the Saloni furniture shows (Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Salone del Complemento d'Arredo, Eurocucina, Eimu.2002 Comfort & Technology and SaloneSatellite).

The whole idea arose out of the awareness that Italian furniture, known the world over for its creativity and style, could represent a fundamental resource for developing the hospitality segment of the industry.

The public space of the GrandHotelSalone, designed by the show's curator, Adam D. Tihany and furnished by some of Italy's foremost manufacturers, function like a real hotel. The reception area is fully operational: the Front Desk, where visitors make enquiries, leave messages, make travel reservations or arrange tickets for shows and exhibitions, is run by students from the Amerigo Vespucci hotel school; the Quiet Lounge offers comfortable armchairs for reading the papers and relaxing; the Wine Bar, open every day, serves the finest Italian wines; the Media Lounge screens films throughout the day; and shoppers will enjoy the well stocked Gift Shop, selling catalogs and books about design and designers, and assorted travel goods.

About Adam D. Tihany

Born in Transylvania in 1948, Adam D. Tihany was raised in Israel, fulfilled his design education in Milan, and after apprenticing in several design studios across Europe, came to the U.S. as design director of the New York firm Unigram. Tihany established his own studio in New York, in 1978, as a multi-disciplined design studio whose experience and expertise encompasses every aspect of design from commercial and residential interiors to furniture, products, exhibitions and graphics.

Most recently completed are: the renovation of the historic King David Hotel in Jerusalem; a new boutique hotel, The Time, in New York; The Disney Wonder Cruise Ship; Le Cirque and Circo at Bellagio Las Vegas; Chef Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bistro in Napa Valley; Charlie Palmer's Aureole at Mandalay Bay Las Vegas (with the famed Wine Tower) as well as the redesign of Aureole New York; Wolfgang Puck's new Trattoria del Lupo also at Mandalay Bay; a new bar and restaurants at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London; the new Sea Grill at Rockefeller Center; and One CPS, former Edwardian Room of New York's Plaza Hotel. Currently Tihany is working Artisanal, a new bistro for Chef Terrance Brennan; a private luxury airpark in Arizona and the redesign of Fred Leighton Estate Jewels on Madison Avenue.

Tihany also has licensed numerous product lines for renowned companies: furniture from The Pace Collection and McGuire; custom china, cigar holders and ashtrays from Villeroy & Boch; a new shape of porcelain from Schönwald Germany; door hardware from Valli & Valli; fixtures for fiber optic lighting systems from Lucifer; rugs.link™, rugs for the residential market through M & M Design International; restaurant linens from Frette; and a barware collection, including the famed Bombay Sapphire Martini Glass, from Christofle Silver of Paris. Soon to be available are Christofle flatware and lamps from Baldinger and Sirmos.

A recognized authority, Tihany was nominated Chairman of the Masters Degree Program at The School of Visual Arts in New York; in 1991 was inducted into The Interior Design Hall of Fame; was installed into the James Beard Award's Who's Who of the most influential people in the restaurant industry; was the subject of CNN's "Pinnacle" program; and has received the 1999 Innovator of the Year Award from Nation's Restaurant News. He is co-author of the cookbook, Venetian Taste, and is the subject of Tihany Design, published by The Monacelli Press in November 1999.
