Why Face-to-Face Business Meetings Matter | A White Paper by Professor Richard D. Arvey, Ph.D.
Commissioned by Hilton Hotels Corporation (Hilton) in Asia, this paper addresses the business and psychological values derived from face-to-face meetings. In his paper, Dr Arvey concludes that meetings definitely matter to the modern business and whilst companies are increasingly relying on ‘computer-mediated’ channels such as email or the internet, they should be careful to ensure that they are still selecting the most appropriate medium for their business discussions.

Janelle Cram has been appointed Director of Sales and Marketing at Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio in Honolulu - HI, United States.
Janelle Cram will lead the sales and marketing team, as well as develop and implement targeted sales and marketing strategies. In addition to identifying and creating marketing opportunities, Cram will examine and coordinate direct marketing efforts to include new market development and community outreach. Cram brings to the team a dynamic blend of accomplishments and talents that includes transitioning brands, repositioning hotels, increasing market share, public relations, e-commerce promotions, staff training and successful team building.

Anita Foss has been appointed Spa Manager at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island in Rangali Island, Maldives.
Anita will manage the Maldives’ only Destination Spa Retreat, an Over-Water Spa with glass-floored treatment rooms and an Ice-Cream Spa for younger guests. Anita brings a wealth of global experience from luxury day spas such as the Aveda Concept Spa at Harvey Nichols in London, the Spa de Serville in New Zealand and the leading Langham Hotel Chuan Spa chain.

Matthew La Vine has been named General Manager at Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort in Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara - CA, United States.
Most recently, La Vine was General Manager at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Naples, Florida, where he led a multi-million dollar renovation of this luxury 125-suite resort while remaining open for business. Previously, he was Hotel Manager at the 200-suite Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood, California for two years; and prior to that, Rooms Manager at the St. Regis Hotel in Los Angeles for three years. La Vine also has extensive management experience with Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts including the Four Seasons Los Angeles, Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Four Seasons Aviara Resort Carlsbad, Four Seasons Toronto and Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas. La Vine has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hotel Management from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he has returned as a guest lecturer. Born in Los Angeles, La Vine remarked, “I’m pleased return to Southern California with my wife and reside in Summerland now. It’s exciting to manage Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort and work with a fantastic team of individuals all focused on providing exceptional guest service.”

Leslie Pchola has been appointed General Manager at The Hilton Austin Hotel in Austin - TX, United States.
In her former role as Hotel Manager at the Hilton Chicago, Pchola was instrumental in changing the operation structure of the property which led to significant GOP growth. She began her career in 1988 at the Hilton International Toronto where she was recruited as a Night Manager as part of Hilton’s Professional Development Program. She went on to hold positions in Hilton Corporate offices first in Atlanta as an Operations Analyst for the Eastern Region in 1994, and then in Beverly Hills as Manager of Operations Analyst for the Corporate Finance Department in 1997. Pchola was the Resident Manager at the Hilton Atlanta in 1998 before becoming the General Manager of the Hilton Cleveland East in 2005 where she worked with the new ownership group to ensure a smooth transition from a managed property to a franchised hotel.

Peter Kacheris has been appointed Managing Director at The Waldorf=Astoria Orlando and the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek in Orlando - FL, United States.
A 30-year veteran of the hospitality industry, Kacheris joins the Hilton family having most recently served as complex general manger of the 2,265-room Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida. In his new position, Kacheris will be responsible for the final phase of construction as well as the opening and daily operations of the 497-room Waldorf=Astoria Orlando (the first new-build Waldorf=Astoria outside of NYC) and the 1,000-room Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek. Surrounded on three sides by Walt Disney World® Resort, the Bonnet Creek development is scheduled to open October 1, 2009. Kacheris began his career in 1978 with Marriott Hotels & Resorts. Based in Illinois, he held positions in operations, sales and marketing at various properties before being promoted to cluster general manager for the JW Marriott Lenox in Atlanta. In 2006, he was tapped as hotel manager for the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando and soon named general manager of the JW Marriott Grand Lakes Hotel in Orlando.

Paul J. Brown has been appointed President, Global Brands and Shared Services at Hilton Hotels Corporation in Beverly Hills - CA, United States. He was previously President at Expedia North America in Bellevue - WA, United States.
Paul J. Brown brings more than 15 years of experience to his role at Hilton. Most recently, he served as President of Expedia North America and of Expedia’s Partner Services Group, where he increased revenues and profits and successfully relaunched Expedia’s brand and marketing campaigns. Prior to Expedia, Mr. Brown was a partner at McKinsey & Company. Based in London, he led the firm’s global travel and hospitality practice and served clients in all sectors of the travel and hospitality business.

Markus Kosch has been appointed General Manager at Hilton Hefei in Hefei, Anhui Province , China. He was previously Director of Operations at Hilton Beijing in Beijing , China.
Mr Kosch joined the Hilton Family in 1997, working in a number of locations across Asia, including Shanghai, Maldives, Nanjing and Beijing. Prior to taking this role, Mr Kosch was Director of Operations at Hilton Beijing where he was instrumental in preparing the hotel for a leading role during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Mark Komine has been appointed Senior VP of Sales and Commercial Development - Americas at Hilton Hotels Corporation in Beverly Hills - CA, United States.
In this role, Mark will be responsible for overseeing all sales strategy and development across the Americas organization. Mark joins Hilton from LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotels where he served as Executive Vice President and was charged with directing sales and marketing strategies for LXR’s properties located throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean. An industry veteran, Mark has also held executive positions with Westin Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Marriott Hotels and Resorts and Fidelity Hotel Group’s Seaport Companies. He will assume his new role on August 18, 2008. Luc Bollen has been appointed General Manager at Hilton Petaling Jaya in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
Mr Bollen succeeds Mr Michael Nagel who managed the hotel from 2001 to July 2008 and now heads Hilton Beijing. Mr Bollen joined Hilton Hotels in 1993 and his most recent posting was as General Manager of Hilton Hefei in China, where he was instrumental in the development of the hotel throughout the pre-opening and operational phases. In just two years under his leadership, Hilton Hefei garnered numerous international awards that reaffirmed the hotel’s standing as one of the best business hotels in China. Starting his career in hospitality as an Executive Chef at Hilton Antwerp, he was then appointed to the position of Director of Operations at Hilton Shanghai, where he steered a team of one thousand employees to successfully increase guest satisfaction ratings and team member satisfaction. During this time he was also called on to serve as Acting General Manager. Mr Bollen’s career has taken him to many continents including Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Gulf region, China and most recently Malaysia.

Larry Luteran has been promoted Senior VP of Group Sales and Industry Relations at Hilton Hotels Corporation in Beverly Hills - CA, United States. He was previously Regional VP of Sales and Marketing for Hilton’s Southeast and South Central regions at Hilton Hotels Corporation.
In this capacity, Luteran remains responsible for the oversight of the group component of Hilton Sales Worldwide throughout the U.S. which also includes Hilton Direct- the Dallas based Sales operation which provides comprehensive meeting solutions for Group Meeting and Event Professionals. In addition, he serves as Hilton’s primary contact for all customer industry organizations, oversees Hilton’s Special Events department, and is responsible for sales contracting throughout the company. “Hilton is committed to promoting best in class talent throughout the enterprise and Larry exemplifies that talent. He is widely respected as an industry leader and his accomplishments as Vice President within this function over the last eight years have been numerous”, stated Ian Carter, President-Global Operations of Hilton Hotels Corporation.
