Benchmarking: Moving beyond traditional comp sets and year over year comparison

Finding the 'correct' comp-set is a real challenge. Hotels often pick nearby hotels as their comp-set, which makes sense but can also be misleading. Starting from basics, the comp-set would ideally be a group of 5 or more hotels that are in the same location, with similar guest-profiles, similar facilities and similar marketing capabilities.

My view is strongly that hospitality needs real people or it can't be hospitality. The humans need to be there to make the guest feel welcomed and taken care of. A little friendly contact goes a long way to improve guest satisfaction.

How can hotels stand ahead of the curve when demand returns?

This is just a personal view, but with all the lockdowns and isolation, I think people are really craving experiences and human-interaction. And I know that the trend has been towards contact-less check-in and reducing staff costs, but at the same time if I had a hotel, I would try to stand out by focusing promotional material more than ever on the human experience of the guest.

Do we need a new revenue management toolkit for 2021?
