Dr. Joseph Chen is a tenured professor of tourism, hospitality, and event management at Indiana University (Bloomington), USA. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1996, Dr. Chen has been involved in graduate student advising, scholarly publication, journal editing, and scientific grant projects. At an early stage of his career, he received a national fellowship as a Fulbright Senior Scholar and several national research awards. Dr. Chen’s journal publications and citations have been recognized by top-tier journals that named him as one of the top-50 leading scholars globally in the field of tourism and hospitality. In the last decade, Dr. Chen has undertaken grant projects on critical global challenges identified by national scientific agencies. These pioneering research opportunities achieved through a scientific merit review include serving the National Science Foundation as Principal Investigator, the Norwegian Research Council as Co-Investigator, and the Ministry of Sciences and Technologies, Taiwan, as Co- Principal Investigator. His areas of research are sustainability in hospitality and tourism, tourist experience creation, and Arctic tourism. He has co-authored three edited research books and one textbook titled Sustainability in the hospitality industry: Principles of sustainable operations, which Routledge publishes.
