Europe’s hotels enjoy year-on-year RevPAR growth

Seven trending hotel news stories that will impact your hotel Revenue Strategy.

1. ADR and RevPAR up across Europe in July

The summer season saw hotels in Europe reporting year-on-year improvements in all performance metrics, with occupancy up 2.6% to 78.5%, ADR up 4.3% to €118.30 and RevPAR up 7% to €92.84, according to data from STR.

Key tourism markets such as Spain enjoyed growth, with ADR up 7.7% to €129.34 and RevPAR up 7.1% to €104.33. However, the impact of the 17 August terror attack on Barcelona is yet to be measured.

Less developed tourism markets such as Poland saw ADR and RevPAR plateau. However, Warsaw recorded a 10.1% increase in RevPAR on the back of an 8% growth in occupancy.

2. Amsterdam considers tourist tax increase

Council officials in Amsterdam are reportedly considering an increase in tourist tax that could add as much as €10 per night to room rates.

Currently, tourists pay 5% tax on room rates, with this set to increase to 6% in 2018.

The new proposals could see tourists paying a fixed fee of €10 plus a percentage of the hotel bill. The increase in room tax is seen as a way to limit the number of budget tourists visiting the city.

3. ADR continues to grow in London

August saw the 10th consecutive month of ADR growth for the UK’s capital, with London seeing a 3% increase to £143.28, according to STR. The increase is being attributed to the fall in value of the pound since the referendum vote in June 2016.

However, August also saw a 2.7% drop in occupancy to 82.3%, following a 4% increase in room supply in the city.

4. Airbnb pushes for market reform in Germany

City authorities in Berlin are to remain firm on a clampdown on the short-term renting of entire homes to tourists visiting the city, even after granting a permit to one private individual enabling them to rent their home for short-term tourist rentals for 182 days of the year.

While Airbnb is calling this a regulatory victory in favour of its sharing economy model, Berlin authorities remain firm that this was a one-off and no further regulatory changes will be made to allow homes to be used as short-term tourist accommodation.

5. Summer sees rates drop across Middle East & Africa

Hotels in the Middle East and Africa saw average room rates drop 12.7% to $140.73 throughout July 2017, despite seeing a 1% increase in occupancy to 60.4%, according to the latest data from HotStats.

RevPAR in the region dropped to a monthly five-year low at $84.98 while TrevPAR also declined 9.1% year on year to $149.31. Escalating costs, including rising payroll levels, saw Middle East and Africa hotels record a GOPPAR of just $35.47.

6. Munich hotel industry sees increase in demand

Hotels in Munich enjoyed a positive summer with year-on-year performance for August showing growth across all metrics, according to data from STR.

The German city saw demand increase 8.2% helped by a 4.3% growth in supply. Occupancy rose 3.8% to 76.8%, while RevPAR was up 3.9% to €87.54. ADR rose by just 0.2% to €113.93.

7. Dublin ADR reaches all time high

Dublin’s hotels are currently enjoying record highs in ADR, according to a recent report from the Irish office of business advisory. The report stated that prices in Dublin had ‘surged at nearly twice the rate of the rest of Ireland over the past year’.

Now, Dublin’s hoteliers are calling for the government to not abandon the favourable 9% rate of VAT awarded to hoteliers, which they believe has been instrumental to driving up tourism numbers and receipts.
