I think one of the first things hotels need to do, especially those that are on older "closed systems" is to convert their core technology stack to the cloud. Why? Simple, once they do, they have a whole set of new services they can subscribe to that can help with automation, make things more efficient.
WhatsApp and the likes are B2C apps, so to make the comparison fair hotel software should be compared with the likes of Salesforce, Workday or Hubspot, all applications that today are fairly easy to activate, but to maximize their potentials, they suggest/require some training and implementation effort.
First thing hoteliers should do is invest and implement technology NOW! With today's SaaS monthly fees and free trials, even in this time with little cash on hand, implementing new technology is possible and affordable.
I personally think robots is a far stretch for hotels. I do however think that automation and self service will make its move into Hotels at a faster pace than previously, for 2 reasons: First, it's what guest want.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, hotels have lost several months' worth of business. The reopening and rebound period are slower than initially expected and occupancy levels will take time to recover to pre-crisis levels.
