Sol Meliá has appointed Esther Trujillo as Vice President of Sustainable Development, a position from which she will lead the definition and implementation of sustainable development strategies at the Spanish hotel chain.

Sol Meliá’s firm commitment to Sustainable Development has been made even more apparent with its inclusion as one of the 5 key strategic areas in the recently announced Sol Meliá Strategic Plan 2008-2010. The company’s main objectives are to create value both for the company itself and for its stakeholders through the creation of corporate policies and projects which will help to strengthen Sol Meliá’s relationships with those stakeholders: employees, customers, suppliers, shareholders, local communities and the natural environment.

To achieve that, Trujillo is focused on achieving “the maximum possible involvement of all of the people that form part of the Sol Meliá team, many of whom have already shown their solidarity on several occasions and their commitment to corporate sustainability values, and also the involvement of all of those people outside the company who can help us respect and improve the environment in which we operate in all possible senses”.

Trujillo also mentioned that the maxim which guides Sol Meliá policy is to “make a positive and lasting contribution to the Sustainable Development of the communities in which the company operates and the people that form part of those communities”. In the medium term, Sol Meliá aims to convert this strategy into a competitive advantage that will differentiate the company from competitors.

Esther Trujillo is a bilingual translator and has a Diploma in Public Relations, after which she also studied specialist courses in Corporate Responsibility at the Harvard Business School and ESADE-Stanford.

Her professional career has mainly been spent at Grupo Telefónica, where she has worked for the last 12 years, focusing on network management and institutional participation in domestic and international Community Involvement and Sustainable Development programmes.

She has also played a key role in the coordination of transversal community involvement projects and in dialogue to earn the commitment of stakeholders.
