Themed "Blockbuster 2008: The Treasure of San Marcos," the invitation, formal grand opening celebration featured Hollywood-style festivities including celebrity impersonators from nearby Texas State University's (TSU) Theatre Department and a "Walk of the Stars" tour highlighting key features of the luxury facilities. Attendees sampled fine cuisine and enjoyed Big Band music from well-known musicians from TSU. San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz and John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts' Executive Vice President of Development Scott Tarwater addressed attendees, sharing the impressive facilities' projected economic impact on the region.

In the spirit of Mr. Hammons' commitment to the communities in which he builds, the event's charitable tie included participation in the Brown and Blue Santa program sponsored by Hays County Sheriff's Office and San Marcos Police Department. Attendees generously supported the charitable initiative with receptacles overflowing with unwrapped toys for children this holiday season.

Terry Nichols, commander, Criminal Investigations Division, Hays County SWAT, was the evening's winner of a grand prize drawing. Nichols won a weekend getaway for two to John Q. Hammons' award-winning Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa & Convention Center in Branson, Mo., via Southwest Airlines.

"We have received a true Texas welcome since Mr. Hammons communicated his vision for building in San Marcos, and we continue to experience significant community support as reflected by our grand opening attendance," said Hotel General Manager Tom Pugh. "John Q. Hammons builds communities, and we're here to be an active community partner."

Representing more than 80,000 gross square feet of flexible meeting space, the state-of-the-art facilities are in high demand. A sampling of conferences that have booked through 2009 includes the H.O.G. Rally, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union, South Texas Press Association, Texas Press Association, and Texas Farm Bureau. The conference center facilities are designed to accommodate a wide range of events, from auto and boat shows to high tech exhibitions, graduations, special events and business meetings.

Strategically located between the state capital Austin and historic San Antonio, the shopping at the Prime and Tanger Outlet Centers San Marcos is the third most popular tourist attraction in Texas. San Marcos is home to Texas State University, comprised of a student population of more than 28,000, LBJ Museum of San Marcos, and the San Marcos River.
