While the severity of a downturn is often measured in the amount of red on the balance sheet, a recent wave of job cuts in the U.S. hotel industry has given the loss a far more human face. Companies such as Wyndham Worldwide and Las Vegas Sands Corp. have trimmed payroll by the hundreds—if not thousands—as part of an industry-wide purge that has shed some 36,600 jobs in November alone, according to the Department of Labor.
