Halifax, Nova Scotia – Savour Food & Wine Month kicks off in Halifax, Nova Scotia on February 1st bringing with it rare wine tastings, chef-for-a-day experiences, cooking classes, prix-fixe menus, and winery tours, to name a few of the events. Throughout the month, restaurants, wineries and vineyards across the province will celebrate its vast culinary offerings, from locally grown and created dishes to international delicacies, and the fast-growing, award-winning Nova Scotia wine industry.

"Halifax's culinary scene is incredibly diverse," says Patricia Lyall, Destination Halifax President & CEO. "We have innovative chefs who celebrate, and create with, local food, and our reputation as a premiere culinary destination continues to grow. Paired with the wines of our province, which are gaining international recognition, we're able to offer food and wine-loving visitors a truly unique experience."

Building excitement leading up to Savour Food & Wine is a newly launched series of web videos by Destination Halifax. The Culinary Showcase video vignettes feature chefs from popular Halifax restaurants cooking their signature dishes. "The web videos are less about cooking techniques and more about showing off our local product in an entertaining way," says Lyall. "Watching the videos is a way to learn about what Halifax has to offer to food lovers, and will hopefully entice people to come here and experience everything for themselves."

The month-long activities culminate in Savour, the biggest food and wine show east of Montreal, which will take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on February 26th. "The show has grown over the past five years; people are excited by the quality and selection of products we have here in Nova Scotia." says Gordon Stewart, executive director of the Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia (RANS), adding that, as in past years, he expects that the 2009 Savour Food & Wine show will sell out quickly.

The Winery Association of Nova Scotia (WANS) will host their 2nd annual Nova Scotia Winter Icewine Festival during Savour Month, from February 12-22, one of only three ice wine festivals in Canada. The festival features tastings of Nova Scotia's award-winning icewines, along with gourmet dinners, ice-sculptures, outside ice bars and more. "We really want people to sample and become more familiar with our wonderful ice wines," says Janice Ruddock, Managing Director of WANS. "Savour Month is great timing for us showcase our festival."
