A total of over 20 Pan Pacific and Parkroyal hotels and resorts around the world will unanimously cast their vote for action on climate change during Earth Hour 2009. Earth Hour 2009 at 8.30pm on 28 March will see the participation of hotel guests and associates at these hotels joining thousands of individuals, businesses, governments and communities around the globe to switch off lights for an hour in a bid to show their support for action against global warming.

The hotels and resorts have made a commitment to Earth Hour 2009 by dimming or switching off the lights of the building façade, driveway, lobby, foyers and corridors in the hotels. Food and beverage outlets including restaurants, lounges and bars will offer candlelit meals and special refreshments to mark the occasion.

In an effort to encourage in-house guests to vacant their room so the lights can be switched off, Pan Pacific Orchard will organise a “Happy Earth Hour” for hotel guests to partake an exclusive one-for-one drink offer in the candlelit Lobby Lounge for a memorable Earth Hour historic interlude. At the Pan Pacific Singapore, the facade and poolside lights as well as lights in vacant guest and function rooms will be switched off. Additionally, the hotel will be extending 20% discount for their orders at the hotel-operated restaurants (excluding Rang Mahal and Zambuca) and bar between 8.30pm to 9.30pm on 28 March. In Malaysia, lights will be turned out at Parkroyal Penang’s driveway, lobby, exterior building signage, hotel foyers and corridors for Earth Hour.

“We are proud to pledge our support to Earth Hour 2009 to vote against global warming. We have always been deeply committed in protecting our environment and would like to take this opportunity to encourage our guests and associates to join forces together to participate in this meaningful cause and we are very pleased with the enthusiasm of our associates,” said Mr A. Patrick Imbardelli, President and CEO for both Pan Pacific and Parkroyal brands.

Recent research indicates that climate change can lead to rising sea levels which will disastrously impact the lives of millions of people residing on low lands in East Asia, African and the Indian subcontinent as well as hasten the collapse of the West Antarctica Ice Sheet in the next few thousand years. Earth Hour is a climate change initiative by the global conservation organisation WWF, inviting individuals, businesses, governments and communities to switch off lights for an hour with the goal to create a platform for a collective voice across the globe in support for action against global warming.

The VOTE EARTH global mandate for action on climate change will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009 where official government policies will be determined to take action against global warming, which will supersede the Kyoto Protocol.
