Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund will be on a riverfront site along the Huangpu River that brings together the past, present and future of Shanghai. The 180-room hotel is scheduled to welcome and captivate customers in 2010. It will sit on the historic location of the Shiliu Pu (Pier 16) which, from 1821 to 1850, was Shanghai’s focal point for shipping and trading activity. The wharf was outside the Baodaimen gate of the old wall that surrounded the city at that time. IHG’s (InterContinental Hotels Group) first Hotel Indigo® in Asia Pacific – Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund – will be designed by award-winning HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, and with 450 designers around the globe, HBA’s international presence, combined with its extensive knowledge of the interior design industry, has facilitated the ability to rewrite the language of design with each new project. The company’s philosophy is to embrace and drive the influence of new technology, new locations, and fresh ideas. With over four decades of experience and 13 global offices, HBA creates the signature look of traditional luxury brands, independent contemporary boutiques, urban resort spas, world-class residences, restaurants, casinos, and cruise ships. HBA had designed other IHG hotels in the past including InterContinental Wuxi in China which is scheduled to open in October of 2010.

“We are pleased to work with HBA on this exciting new project. The Hotel Indigo brand seeks to inspire upscale travellers looking for a non-traditional hotel offering coupled with enriching destination experiences in key Asia Pacific cities,” said Tony South, chief development officer of IHG Asia-Pacific. “Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund will be a unique oasis that meets the needs of the next generation of customers who demand a stylish, individual hotel experience that is authentic and unpretentious.”

"HBA is fully committed to producing an innovative product to drive the success of IHG’s first Hotel Indigo global brand in Asia Pacific," said Alicia Loo, Principal at the HBA Los Angeles office. “This hotel will exemplify fresh approaches, brand authenticity, environmentally conscious designs and capture the landmark experiences of Shiliu Pu in Shanghai.”

HBA will be using the Interpret IndigoTM design concept that offers a new path for real estate developers to regenerate or develop properties with their own creative flair, which will capture and reflect the local character and culture of each location – in this case Shiliu Pu – while maintaining the brand identity and standards. The nature-inspired design will create an oasis for guests, capturing both the city’s vibrancy while maintaining privacy for guests. For example, Hotel Indigo London Paddington mirrors the sense of occasion of the great railway journeys of the past. The sweeping arches and metal grills used in the rooms reflect the architectural heritage of the original Paddington station built in 1854.

Hotel Indigo is quickly expanding across the globe, with 25 hotels already open and more than 58 in the pipeline. It participates in IHG's Priority Club® Rewards, which is the industry's largest guest loyalty programme with 43 million members. Hotel Indigo is the fifth IHG brand in the Asia Pacific region, following InterContinental® Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza® Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn® Hotels and Resorts and Holiday Inn Express®.
