FREE NIAGARA FALLS ATTRACTIONS PUT THE SPOTLIGHT ON SUMMER OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
An outdoorsy Niagara Falls vacation offers everything from hiking the Niagara River Recreational Trail to strolling the gardens of Queen Victoria Park
NIAGARA FALLS, ON -- One of the most surprising and overlooked Niagara Falls attractions is the great outdoors -- and it offers just enough variety to keep everyone entertained whether on an Ontario family vacation or couples' getaway. Even better, many of the outdoor adventures are completely free.
For those who want to get out for a more extensive hiking and biking adventure, the Niagara River Recreational Trail offers 53 km (35 miles) of paved trails stretching from Ft. George to Niagara-on-the-Lake – passing through Niagara Falls, Ontario and running along the Niagara River the entire length of the peninsula. It is known as one of the most beautiful natural areas in the Niagara Falls region.
Just 10 minutes north of the Falls are Niagara Parks' Botanical Gardens with 99 acres of exquisite gardens to explore, including the renowned Rose Garden with over 2,400 roses. On the grounds of the Botanical Gardens a favourite among Niagara Falls attractions is the Butterfly Conservatory, where for a fee visitors may see over 2000 of the beautiful winged creatures floating freely. Another magnificent and complimentary Niagara Falls parksexperience is Queen Victoria Park, home to the Parks Floral Showcase and Centennial Lilac Garden and offering a beautiful vantage point for the Falls and the Niagara River Gorge.
Not to be forgotten are the priceless—and free—Falls themselves. Fireworks over the Falls offers a different perspective every Friday, Sunday and holiday at 10 p.m. this summer (and every Wednesday in July and August). They may be viewed from many vantage points near the Falls.
There is an ever-expanding array of outdoor adventures for those ready to spend, as well. Golf enthusiasts have nine courses from which to choose in Niagara Falls alone – and over 40 in the region. From Thundering Waters, John Daly's first signature course in Canada, to Legends on the Niagara Golf Complex, with two 18-hole and one 9-hole short course, the Niagara Falls Golf experience is memorable for even the seasoned veteran.
For anglers, guided Niagara fishing charter tours on Lake Ontario, the Niagara River and Lake Erie offer great sport fishing; wine enthusiasts can get enjoy the great outdoors in nearby Niagara wine country; and families have exciting outdoor Niagara Falls attractions including safaris and Marineland, among others.
