Right on time with Googles information about Chromecasts further international roll-

Providing guests the opportunity to connect their devices to the in-room TV for playing

content they prefer is one of the most wished for features. However, there are lots of ways to provide this feature, depending on type of device, type of content, type of TV etc.

And no way actually has only pros. This is easily explained with a look at where the

content to play really resides. Content stored locally on the guests device should obviously be streamed directly to the TV without going out of the property and back inside using the scarce ressource Internet bandwidth. But what about content out in the cloud? Is it really the best way to use the guests device to receive content via Internet and then stream it to the TV? Wouldn't it be better to just "tell" the TV which content to play and let it do the streaming by itself? Well, that is exactly the functionality Googles Chromecast provides. Based on the DIAL (Discovery and Launch) Protocol it receives the information what to play from the guests device, launches the necessary app (like Netflix, Youtube, BBC iplayer etc.) and starts playing. This way the guests device doesn't have to stream, is normally useable to browse or check e-mails, doesn't drain battery power etc. because it is just controlling (pause, set volume) what is played on the TV while Chromecast is doing all the hard work.
