Hotel prices have increased across Europe this month, according to the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) released monthly by hotel search site trivago.co.uk. Based on the 50 most popular European cities on trivago, one night in May will cost an average of £110. This is a 12 per cent increase from an average of £98 in April.

Eurovision: Hotel Prices Increase by 63% in Copenhagen

Copenhagen hotel prices have increased by up to 63 per cent year-on-year for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. Interestingly, this increase occurs on Sunday 11th May, the day after the finals. A standard double room will cost an average of £246, which a £95 increase from an average of £151 on 11th May 2013.

Prices are also up by 55 per cent for the final (Saturday 10th May) to an average of £225, 52 per cent for the second semi-final (Thursday 8th May) to £186 and 36 per cent for the first semi-final (Tuesday 6th May) to £166.

These price hikes have caused hotel prices to increase by 43 per cent in Copenhagen this month in comparison to April. Last year hotel prices only increased by 13 per cent month-on-month for the Eurovision in Malmö, Sweden.

Premier League: Hotel Prices Increase by 62% in Liverpool

Although Liverpool FC are now dependent on Manchester City losing to win the Premier League this year, hotel prices have still increased by 62 per cent for the final in Liverpool on Sunday 11th May. The most expensive day is Saturday 10th, when a standard double room will cost an average of £131, compared to the monthly average during May of £81.

Prices are also up by 37 per cent on the day of the match, to an average of £111. Hotel availability on the Saturday is just 4 per cent, which is a 90 per cent decrease from the average availability rate in Liverpool. There is 10 per cent hotel availability remaining on the Sunday. Interestingly, the greatest percentage of hotel searches to Liverpool during this period are from Irish visitors, followed by Norway and thirdly the UK.

Champions League: Hotel Prices Increase by 1202% in Lisbon

The current price of a standard double room in Lisbon on Saturday 24th May, for the Champions League final, is an average of £1,171. This is an astounding 1202 per cent increase from the monthly average during April, which was just £90 per night.

The average price for 24th May during the past 30 days was £295, which increased to £476 in the past 7 days, and finally £1,171 as of 1st May. This means the price has risen by an average of 297 per cent in 30 days, and 146 per cent in just 7 days.

Unsurprisingly, hotel availability on this night has also decreased dramatically – from 15 per cent hotel availability in the past seven days to just 6 per cent as of 1st May.

Denise Bartlett, Public Relations UK: "Although it is common for hotel prices to increase during popular sports events, we have never seen an increase of 1202% and a standard double room costing as much as £1,171 – especially when the average in Lisbon is usually around £90 per night. Even for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, hotel prices have only increased by 148 per cent to an average of £370 for the final in Rio de Janeiro. With availability currently at just 6 per cent, visitors will struggle to find affordable accommodation in Lisbon on 24th May.

Although the price hikes in Liverpool are less dramatic, it is still surprising to see an increase of 62 per cent in a city where hotel prices are usually relatively stable. With availability at just 4 per cent, last minute hotel-bookers will be forced to pay an average of £131.

The Eurovision hotel price hikes are also interesting, given prices only increased by 13 per cent month-on-month for the song contest in Malmö last year. This year they have increased by up to 63 per cent, with visitors forced to pay £246 for just one night in Copenhagen."
