This facility is designed as much for the student experience as college and public guest options. It is built as a learning laboratory for students to be better prepared when they enter the professional hospitality industry. — Photo by The Hotel at Kirkwood Center

From being voted this year's number one meeting and event venue in Cedar Rapids to again earning AAA's 4-Diamond designation and graduating hundreds of successful hospitality leaders, The Hotel has been surging full speed ahead since itslow-key, on-schedule "soft" opening in 2010.

"The Hotel is a showcase for Midwestern hospitality and luxury, plus a shining example of where the hospitality industry is headed. This is what our graduates see as they begin their careers," General Manager Lee Belfield observed. "We are setting the bar for both service and training."

The core of Kirkwood's philosophy in hospitality education was the key reason the college chose to build its own full-service hotel. The $30 million hotel and teaching facility focuses on the philosophy of "learning by doing."

"That idea of getting first-hand experience alongside a professional staff is a time-honored philosophy. It goes hand in hand with teaching hospitals and the entire internship method of learning. Our students get that rich experience not just for a month or a semester. Our students now see one of the best hotels in the Midwest, serving and exceeding our guest and diner expectations on a daily basis. This is an exciting time and place to see this educational plan come together," Belfield said.
