Australian millionaire, art collector and professional gambler David Walsh has unveiled ambitious new plans for a hotel that will adjoin his MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The announcement of the hotel and the accompanying renders which illustrate both the ambition and the scale of the project were given by Walsh at a Tasmanian Tourism event in July, but plans have not yet been submitted to theGlen Orchy Council, who will need to grant planning approval for the development. Considering the size, scale and location of the scheme on the Berriedale Peninsula, there may be complaints from the public, as there often are in developments that constitute such a large change in the existing landscape and panorama. Walsh has said that if there is significant pushback from the local community that he won't go ahead with the proposed development.

The design of the hotel, which would be called the Hotel MONA, HOMO for short, is inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge, and the renderings show it as a huge, red frame cantilever supported on a giant steel truss which allows it to sail beyond the peninsula and out over the body of water below. The five star luxury hotel would boast 172 rooms and be located adjacent to the existing MONA complex. The design of the hotel would see a bottom plinth which would contain a 1075-seat theatre and auditorium and would anchor the suspension bridge from which the top seven floors containing the hotel rooms would hang. Walsh, who is an avid collector of art, rare books and manuscripts would also plan to construct a library within which to display his collection for it to be viewed by the public. Other facilities include "special experience" rooms, where visitors and guests can stay in suites designed by world-famous artists, a concept that seems to be getting bigger and bigger in the world of hospitality. A spa and wellness centre would reportedly be fitted with water that has been treated for waste.

Externally, art will be featured once again, with a public sculpture by Tom Otterness and a children's trampoline by a Japanese artist. There will also be provision for an outdoor music and events venue, and because of the size of the project, Walsh says he will ask for permission to move the museum's summer festival, Mona Foma, to a different location. The hotel will also feature conference and meeting facilities that will appeal to business travelers, who currently make up only a small portion of the annual visitors to the Australian territory. If the project gets the go-ahead, it will be expected to cost up to $300 million to build.
