It goes without saying that half of the hotel experience is down to the physical being of the hotel itself. The environment of the building an hotel is housed in what separates it from being a three star or a five star hotel, from being a big brand or a boutique hotel, or from being a beachside getaway or an urban oasis. While many new build hotels promise luxury in a contemporary and modern setting, sometimes it is hotels that are sited within existing historical structures that offer the most unique and unforgettable hotel experiences. And The Beekman in Lower Manhattan, which just passed the one year anniversary of its opening, is one such place.

Operated by Thompson Hotels, The Beekman is situated in famous New York City landmark Temple Court, a building that was one of the first skyscrapers in the city in 1881, a movement which defined the upward trajectory of 19th century architecture. Billing its offering as "old world glamour meets modern luxury", the building is imposing in its design and scale, and was carefully and lovingly restored by London and New York-based Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, who oversaw the restoration of the original American Queen Anne style architecture, which were popular in the US in the late 1800's and prioritised a melange of different textures and patterns, as well as a proliferation of ornamental detail to create a highly striking and opulent interior.

The 287 key hotel was restored to its former glory by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, who kept all of the incredible existing features including the wrought iron balustrading that encircles each of the balconies that rings the nine-storey atrium, the central feature of the building, and the exquisite floor tiles that give the ground surface such character. The designers kept these historic elements but coupled them with new flourished in the furniture and lighting that complement the classic design and offer a link between past, present and future. Plush velvet seating, leather armchairs, wooden bookcases and panelling all add to the glamour of the interior, and the walls are heavily populated with carefully curated artworks and wall hangings such as Persian rugs. The interiors of the rooms are an eclectic mix of restrained beds and bedlinen, with splashes of colour in rugs or furnishings. The designers say, "The design showcases a lovingly worn and authentic aesthetic, as alongside the original architectural detailing, the interior is stripped back to its purest form and focuses on quality finishes, rich materials and a carefully curated selection of furnishings." The Beekman is seriously photo friendly and has been making the rounds on Instagram, making it certain to become a destination for design and architecture nerds, who will come to see the new hotel in all its current glory.

Anyone attending the next TOPHOTELPROJECTS World Tour event in New York on November 15th in the Standard High Line Hotel can visit The Beekman while they are in the area! Get your tickets here.
