In the wake of cyber attacks in 2014 and 2015 that led to more than 363,000 credit card accounts being put at risk, Hilton Hotels has agreed to pay $700,000 to settle a claim related to the two separate breaches.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said that the Hilton Domestic Operating Company, which was formerly known as Hilton Worldwide, will pay the $700,000 in order to recompense for failing in its duty, instead of just simply having poor security in the first place. This is largely connected to the company having taken too long to inform customers that the breaches had occurred.

State Level Investigations

The investigation into these breaches, which was conducted at the state level by authorities in Vermont and New York, analyzed the two incidents, coming to the conclusion that "Hilton did not provide customers with timely notice and did not maintain reasonable data security," according to the Attorney General's office.

A spokeswoman for Hilton has said that the company cooperated fully with all law enforcement agencies and then took steps to wipe out malware that targeted customers' card information. The penalty will be divided between the states of New York and Vermont. The consumers that were affected by the breaches and may have had their sensitive information compromised will not see any of the money that Hilton is paying in the settlement. The settlement also requires Hilton to now provide immediate notice to customers affected by any future data breaches, and the company must also create a security program for internal security audits to take place. They must also work to safeguard against another recurrence, and have an employee placed in charge of a cybersecurity defense program. Their attorneys generals agreed the settlement with the company, which operates properties under a list of brands that include Waldorf Astoria, Conrad Hotels and DoubleTree, in addition to the Hilton name itself. 2017: the year of cyber breaches

This has been a year of high profile cyber breaches throughout the United States, although the Hilton incidents occurred several years ago. Even so, it's worth noting that companies ranging from Equifax to Yahoo have been in the news throughout 2017 as news continues to break about widespread cyberthreats being brought against both public and private entities such as Hilton.

Hilton is also one of many hotel chains that have been targeted as of late for the way they store and process the valuable data of the customers that stay there. In April, U.S. President Donald Trump's own hotel chain, The Trump Hotel Collection, also suffered the second of a pair of data breaches this year.
