Deutsche Hospitality has joined forces with the Reiner Meutsch Fly & Help Foundation to assist with the building of schools in developing countries. The aim of the project is to provide young people with access to education. The group recently contributed €60,000 from the monies raised within the scope of its "Deutsche Hospitality 1x1" donation programme, and these funds are currently being used to help construct two schools in Sri Lanka and Uganda. Both schools have now celebrated the formal laying of their foundation stone.

The Sri Lankan project is taking place in the village of Rambewa and comprises a pre-school which will be able to accommodate 50 children aged between three and five. Local custom dictates that it is particularly important for the foundation stone ceremony to take place at a propitious time in order to bestow good luck on the site, the project and the inhabitants of the surrounding area. This moment is determined down to the precise minute by consulting horoscopes, and the village temple is subsequently informed of the decision. All participants are then invited to attend the formal laying of the foundation stone whilst Buddhist monks sing a religious "Gatha".

The second project is located in Kaitisya in Uganda, where an existing pre-school and primary school is being expanded to meet growing demand. Plans include the construction of new classrooms, while the previous classrooms will be rearranged as sleeping facilities. This form of hostel enables children who live long distances away to attend lessons.

Over the coming years, Deutsche Hospitality will continue to make funds from "1x1" available for the work carried out by Fly & Help. The idea behind the "1x1" scheme is to create a charitable pot, to which €1 is added for every online booking made via Deutsche Hospitality's own websites. Fly & Help donation boxes have also been placed in the foyers of all IntercityHotels. The money collected has already helped to finance new classrooms and a rainwater cistern for a school in Rwanda attended by 759 pupils.
