Mexico is home to dozens of world-class beaches, and as such it ranks as one of the most popular travel destinations in the Western Hemisphere. There is, however, more to the country's hospitality industry than just beaches.

There are plenty of other historic and cultural destinations in Mexico to visit that don't involve swimming and sand and fun in the sun. In fact, a look at the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database shows that in addition to the usual suspects like Cabo San Lucas and Cancun, there is significant growth underway in both Mexico City and the northern locale of Monterrey, which is nestled in the mountains and near to many ecotourism opportunities such as hunting, mountain climbing and hiking.

Indeed, the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database shows that of the 71 projects underway all throughout the various cities of Mexico, 9 are slated to open soon in Cabo San Lucas, 8 in Cancun, and 4 in Monterrey. With that in mind, we thought this would be an excellent occasion to take a look at some of the non-beach destinations that make appealing stops for tourists inside Mexico.

Monterrey

As we mentioned, Monterrey is located in the mountains, which places it very close to a lot of great outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hiking, and even mountain biking. It is also a historic region, and, like nearly every other city in Mexico, a culinary hub. If you visit, make sure to try the cabrito, which is roasted goat and unique to the region.

Guanajuato

Guanajuato is an old silver-mining town nestled in the mountains of Mexico. It's a gorgeous city that many say is magical. You can spend hours just looking down at the beauty, or wandering through the alleys and streets. There is a great arts festival each fall that makes an excellent occasion to plan a trip around.

San Miguel Allende

San Miguel Allende is a gorgeous and quaint retirement community were many elderly American ex-pats live. It is also a popular city for American college students spending a semester abroad. This is a great destination for quiet evenings and shopping.

San Luis Potosi

In the jungles just outside San Luis Potosi is a surrealistic garden called Las Pozas de Edward James. James was an eccentric European who once visited Mexico and saw a vision in this area among the hills and waterfalls. He never brought that vision to completion, but pieces of it have been built into the mountainside in this state in Central Mexico.

Puebla

Mexican cuisine is some of the best in the world, and the state of Puebla, which is just outside Mexico City, is the birthplace of many famous Mexican dishes, including mole. Just make sure to bring your baggy pants when you visit. Puebla's capital is also home to the oldest library in the Western Hemisphere.
