New life being breathed into Las Vegas
Changes are afoot in Las Vegas, and many hotels are seeing extensive revamps of their properties to bring them into the 21st century
America's playground is like a Phoenix, constantly rising from the ashes. As soon as people think Vegas is over, a new hotel complex, casino or resort is announced to put the focus firmly back on Nevada's capital of sin. We take a look at some of the projects, new and old, that keep Las Vegas making headlines.
F&B making waves in Vegas
Food and beverage is just one facet of the hospitality industry in Las Vegas that is causing a stir. Changing out a tired old restaurant or bringing in a big name chef can be the difference between an ailing hotel and a brand new success story. A few hotels that have made their name on the Las Vegas strip are revitalising their brand by revamping their F&B sectors.
Famed hotel The Venetian has brought itself into the 21st century with new lunch spot Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer. This modern eatery lends a touch of retro cool to the renowned hotel, and other Las Vegas stalwart The Bellagio is doing something similar. Spago, a restaurant famous in Beverly Hills and also formerly in Las Vegas' Caesars Palace, will open a new location inside The Bellagio. Caesar's Palace itself sees a new offering from celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, who opened a restaurant with an open kitchen, a 25 foot long bar and all the drama you would expect from this fiery chef channelled into its interiors and design.
Guest room revamps
Another area that is seeing regeneration are the guest rooms in some of Las Vegas' biggest name hotels. El Cortez Hotel and Casino will see a huge revamp of some of its rooms by the end of summer this year. 73 Tower rooms in the hotel will undergo extensive refurbishment, echoing the hotel's Spanish colonial-style heritage and giving the rooms a new warmth by using exposed wooden beams and softer finishings.
Huge overhauls
Some hotels on and off the strip will see multi-million dollar overhauls of their entire property. The Park MGM is perhaps the most hotly anticipated of these big venture, and the hotel will see $450 million pumped into it to overhaul. This will be an ambitious endeavour spearheaded by hospitality visionaries the Sydell Group from New York, who are behind some of the hotel industries biggest successes in recent years, namely NoMad, Freehand and Ned. The idea is to transform the top four floors of the Park MGM into an exclusive 292 room NoMad hotel, which will boast decadent common and public areas as well as interiors design by Parisian design firm Studio Jacques Garcia.
The Palms will also undergo massive refurbishments of its resort and facilities to the tune of $620 million. The majority of the conversions will be in the reception and lobby areas, which will be transformed by using opulent fixtures and eye-catching artworks. All of the guestrooms in the hotel's Fantasy Tower will be given a new lease of life by LA design studio Avenue Interior Design.
