BOSTON - The pioneer of affordable luxury hotels, citizenM today announced plans to launch a new and innovative hotel in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood. The hotel will be part of the new Samuels & Associates-led mixed-use development known as Parcel 12, located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Newbury Street. The project will include separate office and hotel buildings, which will both be situated above a retail podium adjacent to a stunning new public plaza located over the Massachusetts Turnpike.

For what will be the Netherlands-based hotel brand's second location in the city following its ahead-of-schedule opening at the Hub on Causeway in August of this year, the Back Bay project adds to the latest citizenM locations in the United States recently opened in New York City as well as projects under development in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Abroad, the company operates hotels in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Kuala Lampur, London, Paris, Rotterdam, Shanghai, Taipei, and Zurich.

"We're thrilled to be working alongside the Samuels team on this incredibly important project. Similar to our values, Samuels & Associates fully appreciates the responsibilities associated with urban mixed-use development, and we've admired their thoughtful approach to balancing the interests of all stakeholders," says Ernest Lee, citizenM's Managing Director and head of Development & Investments in North America. "As an institutionally-backed owner operator, our plan on every project is to create a hotel that we and the communities we enter will see as a source of pride for the next 100 years."

"citizenM delivers a distinctive experience for today's tourists and business travelers; this global brand is known for its unique style, top-line amenities, and innovative technology," says Steve Samuels, Chairman and Principal of Samuels & Associates. "We're confident that the citizenM will provide a great new option for travelers eager to experience the culture, shopping, and restaurants of the Back Bay."

As an award-winning, stable and well-capitalized company with a successful track record of delivering exciting new hotel projects, citizenM has assembled a best-in-class team for the project. citizenM Boston Back Bay hotel's interiors will be designed by the Amsterdam-based firm Concrete, a long-time partner of citizenM, in conjunction with Boston's Elkus Manfredi, the master architect of the mixed-use complex.

In line with Samuels & Associates' and citizenM's shared values of green building and sustainability, the hotel is targeting LEED Gold certification. High-efficiency water fixtures will reduce water consumption and associated energy use. An all-electric HVAC system utilizing variable refrigerant flow (VRF) and air-source heat pumps will result in an estimated 19% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the hotel building compared to the Massachusetts Building Energy Code. This is expected to be one of the first installations of an all-electric HVAC system in a new high-rise, mixed-use building in the city of Boston.

"From London to New York, every hotel we've opened has become a neighborhood social hub," adds Lee. "This project will be no different, and citizenM will welcome the Back Bay community not just as somewhere to sleep, but as an inspiring place to work, meet, and relax." In addition to guestrooms, the hotel will feature a spacious living room, lobby bar, canteen, fitness center, meeting rooms, and a rooftop amenity.

Since its founding in 2008, citizenM has upended the rules of traditional hospitality by introducing the concept of "affordable luxury for the people." The company's approach starts with selecting well- connected locations in the world's most popular cities, so business and leisure guests spend the shortest possible time commuting. Each property offers a streamlined, luxury experience — including high-tech amenities, friendly and efficient service, comfortable guest rooms, and spacious and inviting living areas filled with contemporary art and iconic furniture brands from the 21st century, such as Vitra — all at an accessible price.

citizenM's philosophy of "affordable luxury" is best experienced in the guestrooms at citizenM Boston Back Bay. The rooms will be smartly furnished with "everything modern travelers need, and nothing they don't." All guestroom features are designed to be the very best: the beds will be XL king-size wall-to-wall with a superb mattress and luxury bedding. An HD TV will offer a library of on-demand movies, plus streaming options via free, super-fast Wi-Fi. A relaxing rain shower with full-size shower gel and shampoo (as well as giant fluffy towels) will soothe all long- and short-haul travelers. Room ambiance will be fully controlled by an iPad - the blinds, the TV, even the lights with changeable colors.

citizenM Boston Back Bay will also draw inspiration from the local community for the hotel's interior, which will be filled with an eclectic mix of contemporary art, photography, and objects by local artists.

citizenM intends to keep growing as a fully integrated owner-operator in selected gateway cities arounds the world. In addition to citizenM's established pipeline in the largest U.S. cities, the company is eyeing further afield, and will consider expanding further into its existing markets, as well as new markets such as Austin, Chicago, Denver, Mexico City, Nashville, Philadelphia, San Diego, Silicon Valley, Toronto, and Vancouver. citizenM considers ground-up development sites, hotel management agreements, office conversions, components of large mixed-use projects, or conversions of existing hotels. About citizenM

citizenM was launched in 2008 with a purpose – to disrupt the traditional, stale hotel industry. Rattan Chadha – the founder of the global fashion brand Mexx – was inspired by his employees to create a hotel for today’s frequent travellers, giving them everything they need and nothing they don’t. This means central locations in the world’s most exciting cities, but at an affordable price. Not just a place to sleep, but somewhere to work, relax and play – just like home. Somewhere with superfast free Wi-Fi, tech that makes life easy, and world-class art that isn’t ‘hotel art’. A room with an ultra-comfortable XL bed to crash in, and a powerful rain shower to wake-up in. Rattan Chadha called this ‘affordable luxury for the people’. The first citizenM opened at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in 2008. As of November 2023, citizenM’s portfolio has 33 hotels in 20 exciting cities: London, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris, Copenhagen, Rome, Zurich, Geneva, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Menlo Park, Taipei and Kuala Lumpur.
