Airbnb has announced it is participating in Japan's 'Go To Travel' campaign to help boost domestic tourism and support economic recovery in the country.

Like other industries, the pandemic has significantly disrupted the travel and tourism industry in Japan. To help support the local tourism industry, the Japanese government has launched the 'Go To Travel' campaign which offers travelers discounts for domestic travel.

By participating in the campaign, Japanese travelers can now enjoy discounted stays in Airbnb listings across Japan. During the campaign, travelers who book a stay at an eligible Airbnb listing can receive a discount from the Japanese government of up to 35 percent - up to ¥14,000 per person, per night.

"Airbnb is committed to being a good partner to the government and supporting responsible and sustainable travel in Japan, and I hope our participation in the campaign will help local hosts, businesses and communities that rely on tourism." - Yasuyuki Tanabe, Country Manager for Airbnb in Japan.

"We believe that our local community of hosts and guests can play an important role in helping Japan's tourism industry recover. Last year alone, our community supported more than 65,900 local jobs in Japan including more than 11,000 in local restaurants."

"By participating in this new government campaign, we hope to play our part in kick-starting domestic tourism's revival and supporting the many local families, small businesses and communities who rely on it," said Tanabe.

The new campaign will support travel trends Airbnb is already seeing emerge. In Japan, our booking data shows travelers are increasingly looking for unique and authentic experiences that are closer to home.

Research from Oxford Economics also demonstrates how the Airbnb community can support economic recovery. In 2019, the Airbnb community contributed more than $4.5 billion to the Japanese economy. Domestic Airbnb guests spent a total of $655 million across Japan with the typical domestic Airbnb guest spending $624 during their trip.
