Nusa Dua – Minimising the use of single-use plastic, reducing waste and energy consumption, giving back to the local community as well as actively monitoring and reporting its environmental and social impact from its operations has been on the forefront of The Apurva Kempinski Bali since the opening of the five-star resort two years ago. As part of these initiatives, the resort has now launched a Rooftop Garden by using the space to grow various types of greens in a hydrophonic and soil cultivation system to establish an even more sustainable kitchen in the resort.

"The Rooftop Garden is yet another step taken in our resort's efforts towards a better environment", says General Manager Vincent Guironnet. "Our key programme for 2021 is the celebration of Diversity and sustainability plays an integral role in it. It is important for us to deliver an uncompromising luxury experience, while ensuring a minimal environmental and social impact. The launch of the Rooftop Garden is another essential step for us in enhancing our guest experience, by incorporating environmental responsibility."

Ever since the first day of operation The Apurva Kempinski Bali has been known for targeting different aspects of sustainability. Based on the awareness of the damaging effect that plastic waste has on the environment, the resort has been replacing single-use plastic, such as straws, with biodegradable products. Saving water by changing linen only on guest requests in the room or using discarded linen in collaboration with the Diversey "Linen for Life" programme to provide free face masks to people in the local community who are in need, were further steps implemented by the luxurious hotel. Meanwhile, the "Soap for Hope" programme provides at-risk people with access to soap, and information about how and when to use it. Soaps from the resort are cut and disinfected and pressed together to form a new soap bar.

Standing atop the majestic cliff of Nusa Dua, with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and a tropical garden,,the hotel participates as many other Kempinski Hotels in the award-winning EarthCheck Certified programme through which not only the water and energy consumption and the carbon footprint is monitored, but also employment conditions, support of the local community or the use of fair trade goods and services – all contributing to the economic and social health of the region.

"As international luxury hotel operators, we at Kempinski are acutely aware of our responsibility towards the environment, put the ecological footprint at the core of our business model and we strive to alleviate pressure on natural resources in all our daily actions", adds Vincent Guironnet.
