Southeast Asian oasis
Malaysia has one of the strongest economies in all of Asia, with its GDP increasing almost 7% every year for the past half a decade. This statistic alone would make it a desirable place for hoteliers and developers to invest in, not to mention its many touristic and cultural sights. Malaysia is a meeting of east and west, with a culture that is a mix of Oriental and European influences and a wealth of incredible beaches and rainforests. Its capital Kuala Lumpur is surely an international city, with an iconic skyline and a mixture of colonial and contemporary architecture housing countless urban activities to engage in.
Luxury offerings to come
Malaysia's offering of lodgings and accommodation is set to expand over the coming years with the proposed opening of 81 new hotels and resorts across the island territory. These new ventures will bring a further 21,665 guest rooms and suites to Malaysia, and all of the new projects will be at the upper end of the spectrum. 24 of the 81 hotels will belong in the luxury section, while the remaining 57 will be in the first class range, offering new accommodation to business and leisure travelers who are going to Asia on holidays or for work. Between now and 2020, 65 of the new hotels will open, which equates to 80% of the total proposed projects. 16 projects will open in the years following 2020, but this year will see the lion's share of the buildings opening their doors to the public, with 36 new hotels to open over the course of 2018. 16 hotels will open in 2019, and 13 will welcome visitors in 2020. Most of the projects, a tally of 51, are currently under construction, with smaller numbers in the pre-planning, planning and pre-opening stages.
Big brands make their mark on Malaysia
Some of the hotel groups making their mark on Malaysia are the biggest names in the hotel industry. DoubleTree by Hilton, Citadines Apart'hotels and Sheraton Hotels and Resorts will each be opening four new properties in Malaysia over the coming years. All of these brands and groups offer full or part service hotels, residences and apartments, and facilitate all types of travel, whether it is for business or pleasure, or whether you are looking for a beach holiday, city break or all inclusive resort package.
