Mandarin Oriental has appointed Nicola Abate as General Manager of Mandarin Oriental Cristallo, Cortina, ahead of the Alpine resort’s scheduled opening in 2027. The appointment marks an important step in the Group’s strategic growth in Italy and further reinforces its long-term commitment to Europe’s luxury hospitality sector.

Abate will lead the opening of Mandarin Oriental’s first Alpine resort and report to Samuel Porreca, Area General Manager.

Bringing more than 25 years of experience in luxury hospitality, Abate has built his career across some of Italy’s most prestigious destinations and internationally recognised hotel brands. Originally from Desenzano del Garda, he began his career in guest relations before developing extensive operational expertise across front-office, rooms division and hotel management roles.

Abate joined Mandarin Oriental in 2020 as Resort Manager at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, where he oversaw the full operation of the seasonal resort. Most recently, he served as Hotel Manager at Mandarin Oriental, Milan, before taking on his new position in Cortina.

Prior to joining Mandarin Oriental, Abate held senior roles with Baglioni Hotels & Resorts, including positions at Baglioni Resort Cala del Porto and Baglioni Hotel Carlton in Milan. His career also includes experience at L’Andana–Tenuta La Badiola, L’Albereta Relais & Châteaux, Park Hyatt Milan, Hotel de Russie in Rome and Villa Feltrinelli on the shores of Lake Garda.

In his new role, Abate will guide the pre-opening strategy and operations of Mandarin Oriental Cristallo, Cortina, helping establish the property as a leading luxury destination in the Italian Alps.
