A 112-room extended stay hotel is coming to Des Moines' East Village. Developers Lincoln and Lisa McIlravy plan to open an Element by Westin on a vacant lot at the corner of East Third and East Walnut streets. Construction on the $21.5 million hotel is expected to start this fall, with a target opening in summer 2021.

The Element will be six stories with three retails bays, totaling 2,200 square feet, on the first floor. One level will be reserved for parking.

The hotel will feature traditional short-term stay rooms with a kitchenette, as well as long-term rooms with a full kitchen. It will have a swimming pool, fitness area, guest laundry and a lounge. An outdoor patio is proposed for the third story.

Element hotels are sustainably built using "nature-inspired" materials, according to the brand website. The hotel is marketed to the health-conscious, active traveler.

Des Moines has agreed to provide up to $2 million in the form of a tax increment finance grant to the developers.
