Philippe ClarinvalDesmond Hatton, general manager of Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang, is pleased to announce the appointment of Philippe Clarinval as the resort's resident manager effective June 2010. Mr. Clarinval reports directly to the general manager and will play a vital role in overseeing the resort's operational activities, particularly in the areas of service and quality delivery in the rooms and food and beverage departments. Mr. Clarinval joins the resort from Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, where he held a similar position. Prior to Indonesia, he helmed a hotel in the Czech Republic and was responsible for both pre-opening activities and the opening of the property. He led a full-phase build‑out of the hotel in accordance with construction and structural regulations and brand standards, in addition to developing sales and marketing strategies to stimulate and drive brand perception. Before moving to the Czech Republic, Mr. Clarinval worked in a variety of management roles throughout the United States and Europe, including his home country of Switzerland, Belgium and the United Kingdom. He held his first general manager position when he was just 28. Mr. Clarinval attended the Hotel Management School Namur in Belgium, and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management and Tourism from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
