Another year of success for the German hotel industry | MKG Reports

2013 hotel performances were especially sustained by numerous different trade fairs and of course the well visited Oktoberfest. Munich, as in the past, is occupying the leading role regarding all three performance indicators: with an Occupancy Rate of 78,4%, an Average Rate excluding VAT of 114.7€ and the resulting RevPAR of 89.9€ (between January and November 2013).

The best evolution compared to results of last year regarding the occupancy rate is recorded in the city of Regensburg with an increase by 3.1 points, followed by Leipzig with 2.9 points. The greatest growth regarding the Average Daily Rate was observed in Cologne (+4.3% compared to 2012). The greatest evolution in terms of RevPAR is recorded in Leipzig with an increase of 6.5%. This rise in Leipzig is due to important events held in 2013 such as the Profession Championship Worldskills, the jubilees for the 200th Anniversaries of Richard Wagner's birth and for the Battle of Leipzig.

The greatest decrease in RevPAR can be observed in Kassel with -17.1%, followed by Nürnberg with -3.1%. Kassel's fall is due to the comparison with very good results in 2012, as last year Kassel hosted the trade fair Documenta, which takes place every 5 years. Also, 2013 was a weaker year for Nürnberg in terms of trade fairs, which was accompanied by the Siemens budget cuts, which also had a negative influence on the hotel industry in Nürnberg.

Looking at the evolution breakdown by hotel category, the budget segment turns out to have been the most successful segment in Germany with an increase of 2.8% in RevPAR.

2014 therefore can be observed with excitement, as this year is in particular characterized by openings of hotels in the budget segment: Marriott International with the brand Moxy (1 opening), Accor with Ibis Budget (3 openings), Ibis Styles (3 openings) und 2 combination projects (Ibis Budget and Adagio Access/Ibis Budget and Ibis), B&B Hotels with 14 and Motel One with 2 openings.
