Disney Hotels Start to Ditch ‘Do Not Disturb’ Signs
The DO NOT DISTURB sign has always been sacred, but some Disney hotels are starting to do away with it in favor of a ROOM OCCUPIED sign
One of the staples of the hotel industry has always been the sacred DO NOT DISTURB sign, which lets housekeepers and other hospitality staff know that a guest's room is not to be entered. This may be poised to change soon. In fact, Disney World hotel rooms have already seen this happening.
Recently several of Disney World's Orlando resorts have gotten rid of DO NOT DISTURB signs all together. There are four resorts in total that have done this, with those being the Polynesian Village Resort, Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower. These hotels are now using signs that say ROOM OCCUPIED instead of the more traditional DO NOT DISTURB, and, other than the wording, the major difference here will be that these signs will not implicitly forbid hotel employees from entering a guest's quarters.
In a story first reported by the New York Post, the new signage has been said to be related to Disney updating its right to entry policy. The company, however, has not released a statement in response to the report of the change, providing precious little insight into why they decided to make this alteration. What is known, however, is that under the new guidelines hotel staffers must now knock and identify themselves before they move to enter a room wherein the guest has put out the new ROOM OCCUPIED SIGN, and the related terms of service now state: "The hotel and its staff reserve the right to enter your room for any purposes including, but not limited to, performing maintenance and repairs or checking on the safety and security of guests and property."
Other than these four resorts, however, changes have not yet been made at other Disney properties, and it is so far unclear if there will be alterations to the other hotel's signs in the future. As we noted at the start, this is a somewhat unprecedented move, because while related terms of service may be somewhat varied, the signs for the door have long read DO NOT DISTURB.
