After a very complicated start to the year due to the Omicron variant, the business has continued to improve. In the third quarter, the quarter with the greatest impact on the company's annual results, revenues were above those in the same period in 2019.
Together with circumstantial factors that highlight the resilience of travel demand, Meliá has enjoyed strategic advantages that have allowed it to accelerate its recovery. These include a strong positioning in the resort segment, the optimization of revenues thanks to leadership in digital distribution through melia.com and meliapro.com, and the renovation and repositioning of a large part of the hotel portfolio in the more profitable and in-demand upscale and luxury segments. A strategic focus on cost control and improving efficiency through the growing digitalisation of processes combined with the design of a new operating model has also led to an improvement in profit margins.
To continue making progress towards our full recovery, our roadmap for the coming years includes continuing to strengthen our balance sheet through generating greater cash flow, operational efficiency, strong growth in our hotel portfolio through management and franchise agreements, and the sale of some assets in the coming months. Gabriel Escarrer, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Meliá Hotels International
