Sustainability Is Reshaping Hotel Roles and Workforce Expectations

Hotels are increasingly building sustainability teams and integrating green practices across operations, and recruitment specialists are observing this shift from the employer side.
Adecco, for example, highlights a growing category of “green roles” in hospitality, including Sustainability Managers, Green Operations Specialists, Eco-Event Coordinators, Sustainable Supply Chain Managers, and Carbon Footprint Analysts. These roles are no longer exclusive to major hotel groups; smaller and independent hotels are also recruiting to formalize their environmental strategies.
According to a 2024–2025 survey from the US (via ResponsibleStay), the proportion of hotels with a dedicated sustainability team rose from 2% in 2022 to 59% in 2024. The same report shows that 87% of hotels now provide annual sustainability training to their staff, clear evidence of an operational, not symbolic, shift.
From the employee perspective, sustainability is becoming a decisive factor in job choice. A study by Gallup found that 71% of workers consider a company's environmental record when deciding whether to work there. This reinforces why hotels are integrating ESG practices into their workforce strategies: it is increasingly important for attracting and retaining talent.
Overall, the data points to a structural transformation in hospitality: sustainability is reshaping hotel business models, staffing needs, and employee expectations simultaneously.
