As Africa continues to see gains in terms of its standing in the global hospitality industry, it is important for the savvy hotel owner and operator to know where the major project pipelines are as well as what has driven them to be more competitive than they have in many years.

Local workforces

Let's first examine what has given rise to Africa as an increasingly vibrant market for hospitality industry investors. The workforce, which has been a problem for major brands wanting to maintain the high service standards they have set in other regions such as North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, has begun to make major gains in terms of qualifications. Whereas in the past major operators had to bring in staff and team members from other regions, they have now invested in training local workforces that become more invested in their success and far more willing to stay on once a project has been opened for some time.

Increases in tourism

Another advent facilitating growth of the hospitality market in Africa is increases in tourism in major players such as South Africa, Morocco and Tunisia, among others. With an increase in guests comes an accompanying increase in demand for places to stay, and when there is strong demand, things like contractors and investors tend to follow at a stead clip.

So, that's what's turned Africa into a less risky proposition for the hospitality industry than it once was.

Project pipeline

What's also worth noting for global hotel owners and operators is the countries in which the pipeline growth is most heavily concentrated. Some of these are obvious, but it bears noting that the list of the top 10 countries by project pipeline in Africa may also carry some surprises.

At the top of the list is Egypt with 56 projects for 19,673 rooms. Despite security concerns among some travelers who did not voice them as recently as a decade ago, Egypt with its history and size remains one of the most enticing markets in all of the continent. Next is Morocco, which has 46 projects for 12,548 rooms. This is also no surprise, as Morocco with its coastal regions is an up and coming market that pulls guests from all over the world.

The third, fourth and fifth countries on this list are, perhaps, a bit more surprising, in that they are Nigeria, Ethiopia and Kenya, which have 36 projects for 9,194 rooms, 27 projects for 5,342 rooms, and 19 projects for 3,692 rooms, respectively.
