RIU Hotels & Resorts has announced the appointment of Janitha Madawala as Deputy General Manager – East Africa Operations, further strengthening the company's executive leadership capability to drive operational excellence, strategic transformation, and sustainable growth across its East African portfolio.
An internationally accomplished hospitality executive with more than two decades of global leadership experience, Janith, has built an exceptional career directing complex luxury resort operations, multi-property portfolios, pre-opening developments, organizational transformation, commercial optimization, and large-scale operational excellence initiatives across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the South Pacific, and North America.
In his new executive appointment, Janitha assumes a pivotal leadership role, partnering with the General Managers and senior regional stakeholders to provide strategic oversight of resort operations while advancing RIU's long-term commercial, operational, and organizational objectives. His mandate encompasses executive governance, operational strategy, financial stewardship, business performance, guest experience, talent succession, asset optimization, enterprise risk management, and the successful execution of hotel pre-openings, capital enhancement projects, renovations, and strategic operational transformation initiatives throughout East Africa.
Prior to joining RIU Hotels & Resorts, Janitha served as Senior Cluster Director of Food & Beverage & Entertainment for Sunrise Resorts & Cruises in Egypt, where he provided executive leadership across three internationally recognized luxury resorts comprising more than 1,375 guest rooms and 26 dining and entertainment venues. During his tenure, he spearheaded operational performance strategies, commercial initiatives, large-scale guest experience programs, and leadership development, consistently delivering exceptional financial and operational outcomes.
His distinguished international career also includes senior leadership appointments with IHG Hotels & Resorts, Carnival Cruise Line, Premier Inn, Emirates Leisure Retail, Ramada by Wyndham, Southern Sun Hotels, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, and Hilton, where he successfully led hotel pre-openings, organizational restructuring, operational turnarounds, large-scale refurbishment programs, and multimillion-dollar business operations within highly competitive international hospitality markets.
