Hampton Opens 19 Hotels During Fourth Quarter, Adding a Total of 89 Properties in 2000; Announces Plans to Maintain Strong Growth Momentum in 2001

MEMPHIS, Tenn. / Feb. 5, 2001--Hilton Hotels Corp. today announced that its largest brand of mid-priced Hampton Inn(R) and Hampton Inn & Suites(R) hotels achieved its year 2000 growth goals, opening a total of 89 properties.
In the last quarter, 19 Hampton properties opened, representing a total of 1,782 additional guest rooms. Hampton had a total of 1,073 hotels representing 111,231 guestrooms open as of Dec. 31, 2000.
Additionally, the company announced plans to continue to grow the brand by approximately 8 percent in 2001, with a goal of more than 80 new Hampton properties open by Dec. 31, 2001. The company expects another 90-95 Hampton hotels to be under contract by year-end 2001. "The popularity of both Hampton Inn and Hampton Inn & Suites hotels with consumers continues to keep our business performance at high levels, and that continues to drive development interest and the openings of new hotels across the country," said Phil Cordell, senior vice president, Hampton brand management.
"In 2000 we introduced several new initiatives that will allow us to remain competitive and gain market share in the mid-scale segment in the years to come," said Cordell. "We introduced a number of measures to strengthen and build relationships with current and prospective franchisees, including the launch of a franchise Web site and our Principles of Franchising program. The last nine months were very strong for Hampton, as we benefited from the launch of Hampton's membership in the Hilton HHonors(R) guest reward program, the cross-selling advantage of being a part of Hilton Reservations Worldwide and our new national advertising campaign."
Having opened its 1,000th hotel in the spring of 2000, the Hampton brand will achieve another milestone in 2001, opening its 100th Hampton Inn & Suites hotel this spring – just six years after the Hampton Inn & Suites product was introduced. The brand opened a total of 25 Hampton Inn & Suites hotels in 2000.
"Currently, we have more than 240 Hampton properties open west of the Mississippi. With a strong sales and development team under Hilton Hotels Corp. and a new development strategy in place, we plan to double our presence in the western region in the next three years," said Cordell.
Hampton is part of Hilton Hotels Corp., recognized internationally as a pre-eminent hospitality company. The company develops, owns, manages or franchises approximately 2,000 hotels, resorts and vacation ownership properties.
