The School of Hotel Administration (SHA) at Cornell University will offer a free massive open online course (MOOC) titled Introduction to Global Hospitality Management. Classes start February 4 and run for six weeks, with an estimated time commitment of eighteen hours. Participants may join after February 4 and catch up.

Renowned SHA professors Bill Carroll, Jan deRoos, Cathy Enz, and Bruce Tracey will lead the MOOC, which will also feature international industry experts.

The MOOC is intended for anyone in the industry seeking to advance, as well as individuals who are interested in – but don't know much about – the industry. It's also appropriate for use as an employee-development tool within hospitality industry companies. There are no prerequisites, although some proficiency with Excel will be helpful. There is no textbook; a list of supplemental resources will be provided.

Participants may audit the course for free and earn an Honor Code Certificate, or pursue a Verified Certificate of Achievement for a minimum fee.

The MOOC will leverage four main perspectives:

  • Strategic management and planning
  • Real estate and asset management
  • Ecommerce and marketing
  • Human resources management

"The hospitality industry is a cornerstone of the world's economy, employing one in eleven people worldwide and boasting growth well over double that of global GDP," said Nancy Weislogel, executive director of online learning and collaborative programs. "SHA has long distinguished itself as a premier institution in this space, educating generations of hospitality industry leaders. As that industry becomes increasingly global, the MOOC format offers previously unheard-of potential to bring our expertise to an international audience."
