The Marshall House Wins Two Historic Preservations Awards

The Marshall House has received two awards; The Historic Preservation Award, given by the Historic Savannah Foundation; and the Georgia Trust Award, given by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The 2000 Georgia Trust award winners illustrate some of the best preservation activity in the state.

The Marshall House, a hotel located on Savannah's historic Broughton Street, was built in 1851. The Marshall House has been through a series of changes since it was built, including several renovations and name changes. The hotel even served as a Union hospital during the Civil War. It however, closed in 1957 due to financial reasons and remained vacant for 40 years until the Atlanta based developer, John Hardy, discovered the Hotel in 1998. Soon after, The John Hardy Group teamed up with Paine Webber and Coastal Hotel Group in the purchase of The Marshall House and its redevelopment.

In the renovation of The Marshall House, the partners were careful to preserve the building's original design. Restoration included using 19th century photographs and drawings of the Hotel's iron balcony, which originally extended across the entire 2nd floor of the 4-story building. As in 1851, Guestrooms on the 2nd floor open up onto the veranda outfitted with rockers and ceiling fans. The main floor features a restaurant, Jazz bar, and conference facilities. The Hotel's 68 guestrooms while equipped with modern amenities still maintain the original windows, pine flooring and in many rooms, 19th century tubs. The stucco finish on the building's façade also has been stripped away to reveal the old Savannah gray bricks underneath.

Supportive of the historic preservation, Savannah's residents have loaned and donated art, photographs and Civil War artifacts for display throughout The Marshall House.
