Mallorca, Spain | Reggae Sunsplash, the world’s largest and most important music festival devoted exclusively to reggae music recently returned to Jamaica – the place of its origin – after a nine-year hiatus. The four-day event held on August 3-6, 2006 hosted over 50,000 guests at Richmond Estate, St. Ann. Featuring performances by reggae legends UB40, Damian “Junior Gong” Marley (son of the Reggae legend Bob Marley), Maxi Priest, Morgan Heritage, Steel Pulse and others, the festival’s sold-out Saturday night concert was a happening the 25,000 people in attendance will never forget.
“The return of Reggae Sunsplash to Jamaica was an unmitigated success bringing four days of joy, fun and festivity to the island,” said Angella Bennett, Sales Director Riu Hotels & Resorts, Jamaica. “We are proud and happy that we were able to contribute to this important cultural, social and internationally renowned event.”
As one of the festival’s premiere sponsors, Riu Ocho Rios played a significant role in Reggae Sunsplash. In addition to providing VIP accommodations for many of the festival’s artists, the resort also featured a press center for journalists, television companies and radio stations and a variety of other special amenities for guests who came from around the world to attend this one-of-a-kind event. A 20x20 ft. Sky box closest to the stage with the best view for the Riu guests and the opportunity to meet personally with the artists that were staying at the Riu Ocho Rios were only a few of the special amenities for the Riu guests.
“Throughout the entire four-day event, concert goers staying at our resort expressed their delight with the festival and the good times they had,” said Ms. Bennett. “It is certain that they brought stories about the festival back to their homes across the globe, spreading the word about the magic of Reggae Sunsplash.”
