Open Lecture by Professor Pauline J. Sheldon on “Managing Corporate Social Responsibility in Tourism Firms”
The School of Hotel and Tourism Management of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) will host an open lecture “Managing Corporate Social Responsibility in Tourism Firms” conducted by Prof Pauline J. Sheldon, Professor of Tourism at the University of Hawaii’s School of Travel Industry Management, on 28 August 2008 in PolyU.
The changing world of the tourism industry means that those involved must consider their social responsibility and contribute to the wellbeing of the destinations where they operate if they are to be acceptable and successful. This talk will examine some of the ways that tourism firms can become involved in what is known as corporate social responsibility (CSR). It will also address some of the hurdles they face in doing so, and the unique responsibility posed to tourism and hospitality firms. Different cultures have different attitudes to CSR and these will be explained and examined. Case studies of successful CSR programmes in tourism will be given.
Prof Sheldon is President of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and co-founder and director of TRINET (Tourism Research Information Network) that connects over 1,000 tourism researchers around the world. Her research interests are varied and include corporate social responsibility in tourism, knowledge management systems for destination crisis management, tourism demand modelling and forecasting, tourism information technologies, resident attitudes to tourism, island tourism, health and wellness tourism, and sustainable tourism policy. She has published widely, including two books: Tourism Information Technology and Wellness Tourism: Mind, Body, Spirit and Place, and serves on the editorial boards of numerous tourism journals.
