San Francisco hotels to boost city's tourism funds | bizjournals.com
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has proposed a new assessment on hotels that would help pay to promote tourism in the city. Newsom's proposed Tourism Improvement District could generate $27 million in its first year alone, and it is similar to a business improvement district, only bound by business type rather than geography. Of that $27 million, $9 million would go toward upgrades to Moscone Center; almost $18 million would be spent marketing and promoting San Francisco and its hotels.
