Hilton recently completed a major dual-brand deal that it hopes will sure up its status as one of the major luxury hoteliers in Egypt, as well as in the rest of Africa. This deal will eventually bring a Waldorf Astoria hotel to Egypt, making it the brand's first location in the entire continent.
Egypt and Africa as Sleeping Hospitality Giants
For many years, Africa has been a sleeping tourism giant, rich with unrivaled natural landscapes, unique experiences and a deep history and culture. Tourists have recently begun to pick up on this, with the continent becoming marginally safer, and as a result hospitality has surged. Hospitality properties, however, are not available in abundance.
Hotel owners and operators say challenges have long scared off investors from making significant investments in the continent. These challenges include infrastructure and the availability of contractors, as well as trained and qualified staff can uphold the long-time luxury and service standards that their international brands have become known for.
These challenges have also lessened, and now hotel owners and operators who took risks and made early investments in the continent are poised to reap the rewards.
Egypt's Booming Project Pipeline
Nowhere is the coming hotel boom in Africa more evident than it is within Egypt's project pipeline.
In fact, according to numbers from the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database there are presently 52 projects in Egypt's hotel construction pipeline. Once completed, these 52 projects are slated to yield a total of 19,466 rooms for guests.
What is perhaps most telling is the timing of these coming projects, which would seem to indicate that developers who are investing in Africa are thinking long-term and acting cautiously.
While the coming year stands to usher in a scant 11 total projects, that number is set to increase with 14 projects coming throughout 2019. The major growth period, however, is set to take place in 2021 and beyond. In fact, of the 52 projects currently in Egypt's pipeline, 33 percent of them are set for that period, or 17 total projects.
